Your go-to guide for the Academy Awards 2017
This year's Oscars were full of surprises and were marked by a magnificent ceremony which took place on 26th February 2017 at the Dolby Theatre in LA, California. The 89th Academy Awards Ceremony 2017 honoured the best movies of 2016. The Oscars were presented in 24 categories and the whole event was broadcasted on ABC. The televised production was headed by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd and directed by Glenn Weiss. Another famous comedian and late night TV show host Jimmy Kimmel made his debut and hosted the Oscars for the first time.
Coming back to the surprises the Academy Awards 2017 made history with the blackest winners. This might be an attempt to undermine the #OscarSoWhite controversy and to evolve it's voting ranks. Where Mahershala Ali won the prestigious award for his outstanding performance in the Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, Viola Davis bagged her first Oscar for co-starring in Rose Maxson in Denzel Washington's adaptation Fences.
In another unprecedented event for the history of Oscars, La La Land was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture and it was only after the complete cast of the movie was onstage that the mistake was clarified leaving both the actors and audience in a state of shock. It was Moonlight which actually won the award for the Best Picture. Surprisingly so, it was also the most lowly grossing movie of all times which managed to score an Oscar despite the unsuccessful box office run. Moonlight was also the first of its kind to feature an all-black cast to win The Academy Award 2017 in a competitive category. La La Land undoubtedly had the most successful run at the Oscars by winning the highest number of awards for the ceremony.
Starting from the nominations' La La Land received a record tying fourteen out of which it won six. In the second place came both Arrival and Moonlight which scored eight nominations' for the Academy Awards' 2017. O.J.: Made in America became an Oscar winner whilst having the longest running time of 467 minutes in the history of the Academy Awards. Mahershala Ali also made history by becoming the first Muslim actor to ever win an Oscar. Viola Davis was a star of the show in her own right after by receiving the triple crown of acting by winning an Oscar, Tony and Emmy, which was a first for any black actor. Both Ali and Davis won the Academy Awards 2017 in the supporting roles category.
The Best Actor award was awarded to Casey Affleck for his lead role in the movie Manchester by Sea. The movie also won the Award for the Best Original Screenplay and made a total of $ 72.4 million at the box office. Emma Stone nabbed the Oscar for the 2016 movie, La La Land. Damien Chazelle the director the movie also won the Academy Award and became the youngest Oscar winner. La La Land grossed over $ 416.8 million at the box office. Barry Jenkin and Tarell Alvin McCraney won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight which grossed only $ 50 million at the fox office. But owing to it's success in the Academy Awards 2017 there are predictions about increased sales and plans for a worldwide theatrical release.
