According to Kickass Torrents, one of the largest and populate torrent indexes, these are the top 12 torrent-searched movie titles in 2010. Movie title searches are generally the most popular searched for items in torrent indices (after porn).

Sharing movies via torrent sites is illegal when one does not have permission to do so. The movie industry claims illegal file sharing cuts into is projected profits. (There is no absolute means to calculate shared digital file revenue loses. The numbers the movie industry releases are estimates of potential sales and assumes that each one of these copies would have been sold.)

Despite this information, it is not clear what we can interpret from this data. It is interesting that the torrent comity popularity does not match the gross receipts. If movie piracy directly impacted profits one might expect either that the most popular title in the torrent search list had either the highest gross revenue or, due to piracy, the lowest gross revenue.

Revenues are dependent on the date the film was releases in the theater, how wide the release, the advertising dollars spend on promotion, the draw of the actors (and story), and the DVD release of the film.

Torrent popularity might depend more on social buzz, how new the movie is, how new the DVD release is. As an avid film fan, I would add that often the movies I watch via Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand are the newest films available and I suspect its similar for torrent users.
