Born in 1946, Freddie Mercury the legendary lead singer of the British rock band, Queen. Only diehard fans will know the legend was not born Freddie Mercury. He was originally called Farrokh Bulsara before he changed his name to Freddie Mercury while in a boarding school near Mumbai around 1970.
Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar where his dad had to work for the British protectorate. Freddie grew up in Zanzibar and India but later moved to Britain in the 1960s with his family and attended college.
Freddie Mercury was in a few of bands before he joined up with drummer Roger Taylor, guitarist Brian May and bassist John Deacon to form the ever-legendary rock band Queen in 1971. They include Ibex, which was based in Liverpool and Sour Milk Sea both of which never took off.
In his personal life, Freddie was shy and quiet as stated by colleagues who used to work with him at baggage handling, London Heathrow Airport. Some how Freddie overcame this while on stage and gave great performances. Coming up with the name Queen and designing the logo "Crest" were some of the early contributions that put Freddie ahead as the bandleader.
Freddie was a superstar given his multi-faceted talents. The artist had a great vocal range, talent as a pianist and an exuberant performer. He was also known to be a party animal in the club scene. The band went on to release great hits like "Don’t stop me now" and "Bohemian Rhapsody." "We will Rock You," "We are the Champions" are played regularly at sporting events. These songs are available on the album Queen The Platinum Collection.
Freddie's and Queen's most renowned live performance was at Live Aid in July of 1985. The twenty-minute performance was voted the greatest live rock performance in 2005 survey of industry professionals.
While a member of Queen, Freddie made a couple of solo albums and participated in some famous duets with other superstars such as David Bowie and Michael Jackson.
Sadly, Freddie passed on in 1991 from complications due to AIDs. His legend and his music continue to live on. He was awarded Outstanding Contribution to British Music under the Brit Award in 1992. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continues to receive accolades.
In 2018, his baby photo is on auction and bidding ends on 30 November. The music biopic movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, was released in theaters on November 2, 2018, making $51,061,119 in its opening week.
